Growth Thru Art encourages visionary creativity

“Growth Thru Art is founded on the principle that creativity is not limited by disability…”

Growth Thru Art is a multifaceted arts program designed for visionary artists. Working in a variety of mediums, the artists are encouraged to express their creativity; the pieces created are never censored nor critiqued; and freedom of expression is strongly encouraged. And each artist is a person with an intellectual or developmental disability.

The program, originally designed to aid in the development of motor, social and communication skills, offers much more to its artists.

“The studio is a place where everyone is equal,” Linda Mehlhaff, Growth Thru Art program coordinator, said. “The focus is on the creative process, not ability.”

Sometimes artists who are unable to express their thoughts, ideas and emotions verbally use their art as a way to be seen and heard.

“Our artists communicate through art,” Linda continued. “They are able to share and express emotions, thoughts and experiences and connect with those around them.”
While the program has operated in Billings, Mont., for more than 30 years, it wasn’t until early 2012 that AWARE Inc. >>> CLICK HERE to read the complete story.
