A Message from AWARE's CEO: The Power of Community & Advocacy

As we move through the year, I’m reminded of the power of community and the difference we can make when we come together. At AWARE, our mission is built on ensuring that individuals with mental illness and developmental disabilities receive the dignity, respect, and support they deserve. To make lasting change, we need people who care—people like you—to help advocate for policies that strengthen home and community-based care.

Why Advocacy Matters

Did you know? AWARE currently provides services to 5,400 individuals across Montana. We’ve directly invested over $48 million into the state’s economy and saved taxpayers over $100 million by reducing the need for costly institutional care. These vital services thrive through a Private-Public Partnership, combining public funding with Montana-based expertise to ensure individuals receive the care they need while strengthening our communities.

How You Can Help

Advocacy isn’t just about policy—it’s about people. Strong community-based services allow individuals to live independently, rather than in institutions, but maintaining and growing these services depends on smart policies, sustainable funding, and engaged advocates. Here’s how you can make a difference:

  • Stay Informed – Legislative decisions impact the people we serve every day. Keep an eye on policies affecting funding for community-based services and speak up when it matters. Stay updated with the BHAM Legislative Update (March 3, 2025) and learn more about national advocacy efforts on the National Council Advocacy Page.

  • Invest Upstream – When we provide stable housing, employment opportunities, and mental health care early, we prevent crises before they happen. Investing in these resources today means better outcomes tomorrow.

  • Engage Others – Change happens when more people care. Identify local stakeholders, leaders, and community members who can amplify our message and advocate for better resources. Your voice is powerful—use it to build momentum.

Join Us for AWARE Day

With AWARE Day approaching on April 30, we’ll be sharing stories of impact, leadership perspectives, and the history of our mission across social media. This is a great opportunity to see the difference we’re making—and to get even more involved. If you haven’t already, follow us on Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn to stay connected.

Thank you for being part of this work. Your commitment fuels our mission, and together, we can make lasting change.

Warm regards,

Matt Bugni

CEO, AWARE
