In this issue of Ink, we are proud to feature AWARE’s Therapeutic Recreation (TR) team. The TR program at AWARE is young – not even two years old – but the impact is big. We’d like to introduce you to Del, a member of the Therapeutic Recreation Program and SDMI Waiver. Del, originally from Butte, Montana, has moved all over the state throughout her life, from Great Falls to Anaconda, and most recently Missoula.
Del’s story is one of optimism, resilience, and good humor. She has a rich background and is a woman of many talents. Connecting with the Native Center, she became active in a sweat lodge near her, and even helped run it. In addition, she would make dream catchers and earrings to sell at Farmers Markets, showcasing her creativity, innovation, and business savviness. Her thirst for new adventures has allowed her many opportunities.
Since her time in Missoula with AWARE through TR, she has become very active in the community. A main goal of her and Recreational Therapist Candidate, Rowan, was to get more involved in the community and social networks. And that she has!
With the help of her AWARE team and Case Manager in Missoula, she and her cat,
Midnight were able to move into an independent living situation that she enjoys. Newfound energy was brought to Del’s day to day lifestyle with the help of her Life Coach. Because of this, she no longer has a need for the walker she was using. Del donated this walker to others who might need it, stating that many older people may need one. This speaks to Del’s kind and empathetic character.
A few of the adventures Del has pursued since her time in TR, have been attending a sweat lodge, learning how to make traditional Native chili, retreats with her yarn group, basketball, and many walks with Rowan! Some of her many talents include diamond art, knitting, macrame, and beadwork. Del makes many pieces for her family. As her daughter and biggest fan would say, Del is very good with her hands!
A rewarding experience of Del’s time in TR has been meeting a good friend and fellow TR member, Alicia. One might say they are two peas in a pod.
When asked what she is most proud of, a giant smile crossed her face and Del said “my beautiful daughter, grandchildren, and son-in-law.” She looks forward to making diamond art with her grandchildren in their upcoming visit.
Del takes advantage of the wonderful experiences and bonds that TR provides. Her time in TR has helped her prosper and grow into an active community member who has so much to offer.
Our team is growing! If you are inspired by this story, we invite you to join our Therapeutic Recreation team. Check out TR openings across the state here.
