Freedom to Try: Liberty Place 101

ICYMI: A New Partnership for Independent Living

In November, AWARE proudly announced a new partnership with Liberty Place, expanding our collective efforts to support independent living in Montana. We’re thrilled to introduce you to our new partners and share about the incredible work they do.

What Is Liberty Place?

Liberty Place, Inc., a not-for-profit organization based in Whitehall, Montana, was founded in 1996 by four visionary women with a dream: to create a better life for individuals severely impacted by brain injuries. Their mission was to focus on possibilities and strengths rather than limitations, fostering dignity, purpose, and lifelong growth.

Guided by the philosophy of “Freedom to Try,” Liberty Place empowers individuals with brain injuries to achieve their highest levels of independence while enhancing their quality of life. This approach underscores their belief that every individual deserves the opportunity to grow and thrive.

What Does Liberty Place Do?

Liberty Place operates two Assisted Living facilities in Whitehall, providing a supportive home for 20 residents, ranging from young adults to seniors. Each resident is a survivor of an acquired or traumatic brain injury, and nearly 90% also navigate co-occurring mental health challenges. The organization’s mission centers on creating opportunities for growth, fostering community involvement, and ensuring residents live in the least restrictive environment possible.

Beyond residential services, Liberty Place manages Whitehall Public Transportation (WPT), a vital program acquired in 2011. WPT offers safe, affordable transportation for residents and the broader community, connecting people to shopping, medical appointments, and local events.

Liberty Place also plays a significant role in the local economy, employing 40 community members and prioritizing local sourcing for goods and services. This dual focus on individual care and community development makes Liberty Place a cornerstone of stability and growth in Whitehall and the surrounding areas.

A Vision of Hope and Resilience

For nearly three decades, Liberty Place has stood as a beacon of hope for survivors of brain injury, enriching lives while strengthening rural communities. Their unwavering commitment to dignity, independence, and opportunity aligns seamlessly with AWARE’s mission, and we couldn’t be more excited to join forces.

Stay tuned for more updates about this exciting partnership in future issues of AWARE Ink!
