Karen Ellis: An Artist’s Journey of Resilience and Growth

Updated: 4 hours ago

AWARE has been blessed to have Karen in our services for eight years. When Karen started with AWARE, she faced challenges with socialization skills, self-esteem, depression and mania. Through the program, she has worked with and enjoyed groups, Therapists, Case Management, Medication Management, and Peer Support.  Over the years, Karen lost her motivation to engage in artistic endeavors and to embrace her identity as an artist.

Karen has worked hard on her treatment and mental health. She is active in Art group every week and enjoys her 1 on 1 time with her Case Manager, Bessie.

Thanks to the support of PACT, Karen has regained the self-esteem and strength needed to build a meaningful relationship with her partner, Pablos. She applies the tools and skills she has learned to navigate difficult times and now embraces and celebrates the good moments in life.

At times, Karen struggles with motivation to paint. When this happens, she works with her case manager to process her feelings and regain focus. Together, they set small goals, such as spending at least two hours per week in her studio, with the ultimate goal of reaching eight hours.

Karen has become a key member of our weekly Art Group, always encouraging both clients and staff to tap into their creative sides. She describes herself as “creatively pushy,” inspiring those around her to explore their artistic potential.

Last month, Karen achieved a long-time goal by showcasing her artwork in her first gallery exhibition. She also shared her art at the Helena Open House with AWARE staff, clients, and community members. Check out some pictures here

Reflecting on her journey, Karen shared, “I would not have had the support I needed without the PACT team. They respected my decisions and offered assistance whenever I needed it. My support staff has been instrumental in helping me achieve my goals.”

Karen hopes others will see more of who she is, an amazing artist, community member, partner and more.

We are so proud of Karen and the progress she has made through the support of AWARE’s team. Aligned with AWARE’s UCC Principle, It Takes a Team, we believe it takes a team approach to serve our clients and their families.

Thank you for being part of AWARE’s team that helps make success stories like Karen’s possible.
