As the autumn air continues to signal the changing of seasons, we find ourselves entering a period of both reflection and anticipation. The back-to-school season is upon us. With it comes new opportunities for learning, growth, and community engagement. At AWARE, this time of year is a powerful reminder of our commitment to supporting the mental health and well-being of individuals and families across Montana, especially as we navigate the transitions that this season brings.
This period is a time for us to reflect on the importance of education—not just in schools, but also in understanding and advocating for the needs of our community, especially as we approach the upcoming election.
This September, we celebrate Direct Support Professionals (DSP) Month, a time dedicated to recognizing the incredible contributions of the staff who are the backbone of AWARE. Our DSPs play a crucial role in providing the compassionate, individualized care that allows those we serve to live fulfilling, independent lives. I sincerely believe that we have the best care team in the state. Their dedication, resilience, and unwavering commitment to our community are what bring AWARE’s mission to life every day.
As we honor the work of our dedicated care team, it’s important to recognize the critical role they play in the broader context of community-based mental health services. Their daily efforts ensure that individuals with mental health and/or developmental disabilities receive the support they need to thrive. This advocacy extends beyond the day-to-day; it is reflected in the policies and decisions that shape our state.
Another key aspect of our mission is our Early Head Start programs, which provide vital support to young children and their families. These programs are essential in creating strong foundations that can prevent the need for crisis care later in life. By investing in early childhood education and mental health services, we not only support the healthy development of our children but also reduce long-term costs to the state and taxpayers. These upstream investments are crucial in building a resilient and thriving community.
With the upcoming election, we have an opportunity to support the continuation and expansion of these essential services. I encourage you to educate yourself about the candidates and measures on the ballot, especially those that impact mental health care and early childhood programs in Montana. Your vote is your voice in advocating for the resources and support that our DSPs, children, and those with mental health needs require. I am passionate about the work we do. If you are curious to learn more about advocacy and how you can support community-based mental health, please reach out to me here.
At AWARE, we believe that everyone deserves access to the care and opportunities they need to live their best life. It takes a team. Thank you for your continued support and dedication to our mission.
Sincerely,
Matt Bugni – CEO
