In 2023, the Trustees of The Steele-Reese Foundation awarded a $20,000 grant for one year to AWARE. The funds were used to support increased curriculum options and create a robust library designed to engage students in reading and literacy while meeting the wide educational needs of the children served at the Center for Excellence in Anaconda, Montana.
AWARE’s Center for Excellence received full accreditation in 2023. This school offers a unique approach to providing a holistic, high-quality education that meets children where they are. This type of education experience requires constant evaluation and evolution. As AWARE continues to identify the needs of the students enrolled in school, it has become apparent that there is a need for expanded curriculum, specifically the literacy curriculum and providing access to culturally and academically diverse learning material to ensure an inclusive learning environment. The funds awarded by The Steele-Reese Foundation provided the resources necessary to invest in additional curriculum and reading materials.
In keeping with AWARE’s approach to education, the students at the school were engaged in the process of bringing the library to life. In 2022 AWARE’s students selected the Wolf as their mascot. A perfect extension of theme is reflected in the Wolf Hollow Library- a name inspired by Lauren Wolk’s novel, Wolf Hollow, which promotes themes of self-reliance, hope, and justice. Additionally, staff and students had the opportunity to help select the books and media for the library, supporting our philosophy of educating from an inclusive, strength-based platform.
“We are grateful for the support we received from The Steele-Reese Foundation. Their investment made a big impact and is already enhancing the learning experience for the children we serve at the center. This award and the implementation of it wouldn’t be possible without the incredible team we have. Their commitment to the students at our Center for Excellence is inspiring. On behalf of all of us at AWARE, I thank the trustees for recognizing the importance of the work we are doing at our school,” Brynn Molloy, AWARE Director of Development and Marketing, said.
