Being mindful is a practice. You may find that you need a reminder to come back often. It’s easy to get lost in thoughts and daily activities without thinking. For example, have you ever hopped in your car, drove down the road, and arrived without knowing how you got there?
When you’re on autopilot, you’re not fully participating in the opportunities life offers. Noticing brings you back to your body and helps you focus on the activity at hand.
Using your cellphone as a tool is an easy way to support mindfulness. Mindfulness.org offers a couple tips on how to use this device, which is often not far out of reach:
1. Set an alarm on your phone as a reminder. You can set it to ring a few times a day. When it sounds, stop for a moment and take a deep mindful breath.
2. Use text messages as a mindful reminder. When you hear a text message come through, pause for a moment before checking the message. Become aware of your surroundings and reflect rather than automatically reacting.
Being mindful throughout your day is a good way to support your mental wellness. You can read more about present moment awareness here.
